Video: Weekends - "Roommate / Raingirls"

It was really hot outside. I arrived at the Copycat early one Saturday to help out with a music video. The Copycat Theatre troupe, responsible for Rooms Play and other wonderment, had written and choreographed a short for our friends Weekends.

Guy Werner and Kevin Blackistone descended upon the space with a truck full of lights (hot lights) and the rest of their video gear. What ensued was a video for two songs off of Weekends' Strange Cultures. Brendan Sullivan and Adam Lempel  are invaded during a sweaty rendition of "Roommate" in their old practice space, and taken to the Copycat Theater's fantasy world for "Raingirls." Claymation animates the second half, a psychedelic whirlwind of clay, umbrellas, dancing, and Sam Shea in a bear costume.

The first half of this was recorded that hot Saturday, the daylong shoot ended with Weekends rushing over to a gig at Floristree. Brendan rode with me over to the H&H, and there's still red body paint from the video's abduction on my passenger seat.

Weekends are working on their next LP now, the first taste of which will be here.

New: Ed Schrader Show

The Ed Schrader Show was back in action a few weeks ago, and the glorious new episode just went live on the interwebs last night compliments of Guy Werner and probably a million other awesome people. This episode featured Ellie Beziat (Sick Weapons, RIP), director Matt Porterfield, and a performance by Future Islands.

Watch it below and after the jump, and steer clear of the cat with herpes in its eye.

Video: Dan Deacon and So Percussion

A few weeks ago Dan Deacon and So Percussion collaborated on a performance in NYC for the Ecstatic Music Festival. Baltimore's favorite A/V junky, Guy Werner, took the trip up I-95, and you can check out his highlight reel of the performance below.

This went down Thursday, January 20 at the Merkin Concert Hall, and featured works from both artists including a composition written by Dan Deacon exclusively for the So Percussion ensemble to perform. This composition was called Ghostbuster Cook: Origin of the Riddler, and you can catch the performance in it's entirety below with many thanks to Guy Werner, Lawson Smith, Sam Herring, and all of the musicians involved.

Live MP3s: Lil B at Whartscape 2010

It's been several months since Whartscape 2010 went down here in Baltimore, but we're still stockpiling recordings of live sets compliments of Guy Werner.

Today I've got a pretty special one for you, in what was easily the most "based" performance to ever go down at Whartscape. Lil B made the trip out from the California Bay area to perform for Friday's Whartscape crowd outside of Current Space.

Lil B has made a name for himself this year by releasing the first ever ambient hip hop record, having a freakish online presence, and by appointing himself the one and only Based God. His live performance was not in the least a compromise - shouting out to all the hipsters, nerds & punks, telling everyone he's Jesus (and Mel Gibson), and using the word "swag" more times in a half hour than we thought was humanly possible. So based.

Photos/Sounds: Oxes at the Windup Space

oxes @ the windup space
Baltimore's legendary Oxes played the Windup Space last weekend, a pretty rare appearance from the trio. We already showed you Guy Werner's video of a new song, and now give you photos from Valerie and Guy's audio of the entire set.

new Oxes - "Crunchy Zest"

There is a band from Baltimore called Oxes. They used to play a lot, and now they don't. This has changed very temporarily, as Nat Fowler's been back in town for the past month or so. They played Whartscape, and more recently played their first non-Whartscape related gig in the past several years.

A late night set went down at the Windup Space Saturday night, and was definitely a much welcomed affair. Blasting a packed house for nearly an hour, it was pretty incredible to witness Marc Miller, Christopher Freeland, and Nat Fowler back in action.

Not only did they play a rare show, but they also displayed some brand new material. Above you'll find Guy Werner's video for "Crunchy Zest", glorious proof that the dude's still have it in 'em. This rad new track wasn't even the highlight, as the entire set was easily one of the best I've experienced all year.

Check back this week for photos, and peep some psyche-blown footage below.

Video: Future Islands - "In The Fall (acoustic)"

Guy Werner strikes again, this time with live video footage of the first ever Future Islands acoustic set. The show took place a month ago at the Metro Gallery, and was part of the opening of Wild Nothing which was curated by Elena Johnston and Natasha Tylea.

In addition to some insight from some of those very closely involved, the video features footage of the first two songs of their set that night. "In Evening Air" lead directly into "In The Fall", opening one of the most beautiful shows I've witnessed in town this year.
