The Ed Schrader Show was back in action a few weeks ago, and the glorious new episode just went live on the interwebs last night compliments of Guy Werner and probably a million other awesome people. This episode featured Ellie Beziat (Sick Weapons, RIP), director Matt Porterfield, and a performance by Future Islands.
Watch it below and after the jump, and steer clear of the cat with herpes in its eye.
I haven't done a Clusterfuck post in a while, but this weekend's abundance of shows is calling for it. I've already highlighted the majority of these shows, so we'll keep it short and sweet as a friendly reminder of what you can treat your ears to this weekend.
Tonight the Windup Space is where you should be, as Shark Tank will be rocking their record release show with Ed Schrader and Moss of Aura. More info right here.
Tomorrow night sports a bill curated in full by yours truly, as Weekends, Raindeer, Winks, and Holy Ghost Party take over the Golden West. These are some of my absolute favorite new bands from Baltimore, and I'm stoked to bring them all together for one bill. This one's just $5, more info on the affair can be found right here.
And last but not least, Sunday night's got a killer show as well, as everyone's favorite doom-folk outfit will be celebrating their new record upstairs at the Ottobar. For their record release show, Arbouretum will be joined by Secret Mountains, making this more than worth not paying for. Yup, this one's free, and it starts at 9 PM.
For the past few years Wham City has gotten in on the holiday spirit with a compilation called Baltimas!!!!!!. Six exclamation points marks this the sixth year of Baltimas.
In addition to the auto-tuned wonder that is Dan Deacon and Ed Schrader's "Electronica Hanukkah", the duo also contributes a ditty about our modern wold, "Santa's Going Digital". The free compilation features a wide range of sounds contributed from a plethora of artists - 38 spirited tracks up for free download. Get it over at Wham City.
It seems like the first couple weeks of December are always jam-packed with shows, with folks trying to fit as much in as possible before all that holiday cheer and snow.
Tonight you've got a couple options, starting with the show I mentioned yesterday at the Annex in 3E. Ed Schrader, Shark Tank (featuring Height, Mickey Free, Lord Grunge, & Brendan Richmond), Blue Walls (Jenn Wasner), and Showbeast will all provide for a good time, guaranteed. This one gets going around 9 PM and will be cheap.
If you feel like dancing a whole lot, Deep In The Game takes over the Hippo. Peep Mark Brown's video flyer above, and tonight includes a live performance by Sewn Leather.
Tomorrow night sports a trio of options, starting with a show at the Golden West that's likely to blast the antlers right off of that giant moose head. Dope Body is celebrating the release of their split with Orphan, the band's first release on wax. I have yet to hear the full split, but Michael Byrne had some kind things to say in this week's Citypaper. This show will be a round robin, and will include our other favorite local bass/drum/vocal trio, Double Dagger. This one doesn't start until after 11 PM, and costs five dollars.
Also Saturday night, The Parting Gifts (Oblivians, Reigning Sound) plays one of only three East Coast shows at the Windup Space. They'll be joined by locals Hollywood and The Slow Jerks, who always prove to be a good time. You also might end up back at the Annex on Saturday, where you'll find The Super Vacations, Juiceboxxx, 400 Cloaks, DDP, along with Schwarz and Cullen Stalin DJing. Both of these options start at 9 PM.
Tomorrow night the Annex 3E hosts Ed Schrader, Shark Tank (featuring Height, Mickey Free, Lord Grunge, & Brendan Richmond), Blue Walls (Jenn Wasner), and Showbeast.
Shark Tank has been in the works throughout 2010, with Baltimore's Dan Keech AKA Height and Mickey Free providing for half the squad. The other half consists of Grand Buffet's Lord Grunge, and Brendan Richmond who's been amongst Height's friends.
Streaming above is "Red Rain", the first taste off the group's debut album. If you were at the Hexagon this past May for Height with Friends' Bed of Seeds release party, you'll recognize "Red Rain". Download that full set here, "Red Rain" picks up at the 13:20 mark.
I'm pretty stoked to see what Jenn Wasner's solo project entails, and am never let down seeing Ed Schrader's name on the bill. Doors for this show open at 8PM on Friday.
Yesterday's jams were seasonal, as that Wigflip compilation screamed summer, while that INEVERYROOM track is probably best used while still dripping from the Prettyboy Reservoir. Today, I have yet another summer-soaked jam for you folks to rock.
Videohippos just dropped a brand new release, a split CDR with their friends Sewn Leather. There are three brand new Videohippos tracks on this release, all of which feature contributions from other local musicians. The help includes DJ Dog Dick on "High Dive", Teeth Mountain on "Bottles", and Ed Schrader on "Fire Foot". Take a gander:
Right from the get-go, this one sports hazy keys that provide the kind of melody that is typically found up in the clouds. There are birds chirping throughout, further cementing this as one of the first true local summer jams of the year. Suggestions for use include while biking down to Jones Falls, porch-sitting, and late night rooftop sessions.
Production was headed by the always awesome Chester Gwazda, and the art is by Lesser Gonzalez. This release come compliments of Tater Junction, and even comes with a Videohippos sticker! There are only a handful of these left out of the original 150 copies, and you can snag them from Atomic Books and True Vine. VIDEOHIPPOS / SEWN LEATHER
1) HIGH DIVE (featuring DJ DOG DICK) 2) BOTTLES (featuring TEETH MOUNTAIN) 3) FIRE FOOT (featuring ED SCHRADER) 4) SMOKE OV THE PVNK 5) 4000 CALORIES
Guy Werner just posted the new Ed Schrader show, which took place at Open Space last month. Peep the Double Dagger performance above, and watch the full episode below.
The Ed Schrader Show got back in action last Thursday in grand fashion at Open Space. The talk show portion set up in the gallery, and ended up selling out with some folks forced to watch the antics from the windows outside. In addition to abnormally large cat visual freak outs, Blow-Bot, a hauntingly funny impression of a Bolt Bus driver, and a full supporting band that included Dan Deacon - Ed Schrader provided us with Double Dagger.
The show closed with an interview by the Ed-proclaimed "U2 of Baltimore", followed by a performance in the space next door. Double Dagger's new EP Masks is now available, and I just got my vinyl copy in the mail as part of the first shipment of this year's Thrill Jockey 12 inch subscription series. The packaging is as great as it sounded, and I'll have some words on the songs in the coming weeks.
Peep the rest of Valerie's photo set from the evening after the jump.
Once you are done shoveling snow from your awning or roof so it doesn't collapse, I've got some activities for you to take part in this weekend. And if you're car is stuck on a street that's still not plowed like mine - then those boots are made for walking.
Tonight you've got a couple options, one of which is a big 'ol party at Sonar that I mentioned earlier this week. This will be the Baltimore debut of Mobroder, a new Spank Rock project that features the help of Blu Jemz and DJ Hoff. This "disco supergroup" more than likely won't suck at all, and should offer a good look at what to expect from the release they've been working on.
If disco-infused hip hop ain't your thing, head to the Zodiac for what promises to be a spectacularly weird musical happening. Forms of Ed Schrader and Lexie Mountain will be performing, Ed playing with his new band and Lexie playing with Sam Garner. The out-of-towners are Miracle Condition, who are ex-members of U.S. Maple.
Saturday night boasts some choices as well, one of which will find you at the Talking Head room for a last minute Taxlo throw-down. Cullen and Simon are bringing in Nite Jewel, and also will be doing some spinning of records themselves. Nite Jewel is kind of like what might happen if Grouper starting playing some lounge tunes. Hazy vocals with a 80s dance feel, this project garnered considerable buzz last year.
The Hexagon has a hefty bill of doom and ambient metal Saturday night if you're in the mood to have your ears blasted. Nadja headline, a Toronto/Germany based project from the likes of Aidan Baker. Local doom outfit Oak and Brooklyn black metal band Liturgy lead support, while Major Powers make a rare appearance.
Wham City has provided us with a Baltimas holiday mix for the past several years, relinquishing their take on seasonally festive music and entertainment.
This year's is no different, and features a plethora of cuts from local contributors including Ed Schrader, Dan Deacon, Benny Boeldt, Devlin Rice, Steve Strohmeier, Dina Kelberman, Ryan Wirth, Connor Kizer, Meredith Moore, Adam Endres, Jimmy Joe Roche, and more.
The 2009 mix is calledBaltimas!!!!!!, and you can stream/download it below.
Everyone's favorite avenue watering hole is hosting quite the event next week. The Golden West presents Golden Westival and/or Golden Fest. Call it what you will, this a four night local music extravaganza of varying sorts.
The Golden West has been a popular workplace for artists, and this gathering aims to serve as a pretty bad ass employee talent show. A mere 20 bucks gets you in all four nights, or 6 dollars for each night. In addition to music, Braegen promises a theatrical performance and a science experiment.
This years HampdenFest takes place this Saturday the 13th. Always a good time, this year's highlights include Thrushes, Lexie Mountain Boys, The Oranges Band and tons more. As usual its a free affair, check out deets on all the action below:
