Teeth Mountain - Teeth Mountain Reissue

For those that haven't quite yet experienced the free-formed percussive drone that is Teeth Mountain, their debut LP isn't a bad place to start. While they're best served in a live setting, their 2008 long player that came out on SHDWPLY has been worn pretty thin by my record needle with spin after spin over the past couple years.

As the original LP is currently sold out, WTR CLR has recently announced the CD reissue of this killer release. With the original artwork in tact via DVD case form, WTR CLR continues to focus on the quality of each release's packaging and art.

"Ghost Science" is the fifth track on the LP, a looping and meditative romp that stampers into an eventual eruption - an explosion of the warped and synthetic variety. Flute-like whistles screech until they eventually give way, sending you right back to the ground in which the short journey began.

Snag the album here, where you can also download and hear "Harh Tanz".

Videohippos - "High Dive (ft. DJ Dog Dick)"

Yesterday's jams were seasonal, as that Wigflip compilation screamed summer, while that INEVERYROOM track is probably best used while still dripping from the Prettyboy Reservoir. Today, I have yet another summer-soaked jam for you folks to rock.

Videohippos just dropped a brand new release, a split CDR with their friends Sewn Leather. There are three brand new Videohippos tracks on this release, all of which feature contributions from other local musicians. The help includes DJ Dog Dick on "High Dive", Teeth Mountain on "Bottles", and Ed Schrader on "Fire Foot". Take a gander:

Right from the get-go, this one sports hazy keys that provide the kind of melody that is typically found up in the clouds. There are birds chirping throughout, further cementing this as one of the first true local summer jams of the year. Suggestions for use include while biking down to Jones Falls, porch-sitting, and late night rooftop sessions.

Production was headed by the always awesome Chester Gwazda, and the art is by Lesser Gonzalez. This release come compliments of Tater Junction, and even comes with a Videohippos sticker! There are only a handful of these left out of the original 150 copies, and you can snag them from Atomic Books and True Vine.

VIDEOHIPPOS / SEWN LEATHER

1) HIGH DIVE (featuring DJ DOG DICK)
2) BOTTLES (featuring TEETH MOUNTAIN)
3) FIRE FOOT (featuring ED SCHRADER)
4) SMOKE OV THE PVNK
5) 4000 CALORIES

Clusterf*ck: Tuesday Night Edition
deacon at bernie's, cex, harlem, and more...

As once noted in a post with The G, we don't endorse the drugs. However, we totally support musical happenings in Baltimore. And for whatever reason, the 20th day in April seems to spark up a handful of worthwhile events around town.

Harlem's new album is called Hippies, and shit, I can't think of a band with a new album title that is a better ode to this so-called holiday. Yes, hippies are the product of a never-ending 4/20, but you won't find any Grateful Dead covers on this new LP via Matador. You will however find sixteen garage pop tracks that are light-hearted, full of fuzz, and catchy as all hell.

Harlem were fantastic last time they came around these parts, and I'd expect no less tonight at the Golden West when they play with Eternal Summers and Junkers.

Over at the Red Room you'll find a rather intriguing set of performances tonight. Dan Deacon will team up with Teeth Moutain member Andrew Bernstein to form what is to be called Deacon at Bernie's. The duo will be performing along with three short films by Lillian Schwartz and Stan Van Der Beek, which were curated by Mary Helena Clark.

If this wasn't enough to keep your head held high, world-renown cellist Charles Curtis will also be in town and performing in the Red Room. This one will run ya six dollars and starts at 8.

If you're not burnt out, one of Baltimore's biggest weekday dance parties is back in full 420 action tonight at the Hippo. Deep In The Game sports residents CEX and Schwarz, and tonight will feature guest DJ Cullen Stalin. This one's free before 11, but $5 after.

Streaming below is a recent mix by CEX dubbed "Archbroseph of Berlintimore Tbass Mix Series #9", which totally lives up to being described as a "relentless mix of skanky heavy bass Grime ruffness."

PC Worship: NYC Stone Age

Justin Frye hails from both the psychedelic echoes of Gary War and the tribal chaos that is Teeth Mountain. His own project is dubbed PC Worship, of which he just dropped NYC Stone Age via SHDWPLY Records.

With plenty of contemporary lo fi choices at your disposal, some of the best as of late have come from the SHDWPLY label.

My personal favorite was the The Super Vacations debut LP, but PC Worship is creeping its way up there. Surely a grower, the album boasts sonic noise paired with varying blends of off kiltered neo-psychalelia.

The LP was recorded from 2006-2009 in Brooklyn on a four track reel-to-reel tape machine. Plenty of fuzz throughout, Frye dabbles in frenetic free jazz, woozy folk, and shades of psych pop. The record is limited to 200 or so copies, all with hand made silk screen white covers, and unfortunately looks to be way sold out. However, you can download the entire thing for free right here.

Dan Deacon @ Transmodern Festival

The huge influx in must see shows this weekend is mostly due to Transmodern Festival. The weekend-long event is taking place throughout the H&H Building and boasting every type of art one could desire.

Arguably the most anticipated act of the event is Dan Deacon's Saturday night performance.

The Wham City founder is on a bit of high note, after just blowing most of our minds by dropping his latest LP, Bromst. His second album takes all that is great about his live shows and his debut, and rewrites it into an electronic-based symphony of pure joy.

The album features over 30 musicians, creating sounds the old-fashioned way unlike his previous efforts. There are still the building synths and feel good yet spazzed out vocals, but the sound is overall much more organically clean and wholesome.

In addition that night, look to catch Deacon's upcoming Bromst tour buddies and personal favorites of mine Future Islands and Teeth Mountain. Hot diggity, are you as torn between this and Ariel Pink / Vivian Girls as I am? Choices my friends, choices.

More Double Dagger Shows/Cover Art

Cover art for Double Dagger's More was revealed today, and is looking to be pretty much on par to any high expectations. Lofty hopes are probably the case considering Nolen and Bruce both teach design at MICA, and are resposibile for Post Typography.

The album is still due out May 5th via Thrill Jockey, but dude's have a busy week planned of wildly unrestrained post-hardcore fun. I admit, I still don't know how to effectively classify their utter awesomeness. Which is obviously a redeeming quality of the trio.

Based on the new songs they've been playing live, More is looking to be pretty ridiculous. And considering they are mini-touring with Future Islands this weekend, I'd say attending one or all of the following would be wise:

Top 10 Bmore Albums of 2008

From folk to electro-punk to tribal drum jams, 2008 was another solidly diverse year for local releases. With other mediums bound to be sharing their favorite LPs of the year, thought I would focus on just what Baltimore had to offer.

70% of the list just so happens to be Round Robining at the event pictured to the left. December 18 and 19 at Sonar. Check my list below...

10.
Yukon - Medallion EP

9. Teeth Mountain - Self Titled

8. Arbouretem (split 12" with Pontiak) - Kale

7. The Deathset - Worldwide

6. Adventure - Self Titled

5. Wilderness - (k)no(w)here

Originally an accompaniment score to an art exhbit, this is by far the bands most cohesive release yet. Slow-core moans paired with monstrous drums give way to unexpected quiet moments of pure sonic bliss.

4. Future Islands - Wave Like Home

In addition to one of my favorite album covers of the year, the highly anticipated debut full length delivers on sound as well. All in all, it's poppy new wave punk at its best while still leaving room to improve.

3. Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez - Why is Bear Billowing?

I've already compared Lesser to the likes of Nick Drake and early Devandra Banhart, which in my opinion is some pretty high praise. His debut trickles along with simple sounds that elude to complex ideas. An under-the -radar artist that deserves far more of your attention.

2. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual

Themes of pixie stix and finger painting combine with mind-numbing rock and roll riffs to make the band's second LP something unlike anything else. This is an album that needs to be heard in it entirety, which I'm sure is typically not an issue for most who give it a go.

1. Beach House - Devotion

Beach House are epic. Paving the way for even more spacey dream pop gems that were released this year (Fight Bite, Grouper), the duo seems to be making lives more beautiful all over the world. After another tour heading into 2009, Victoria and Alex have hopes to record the third LP this winter.

The Super Vacations & Teeth Mountain

Everybody loves vacations. Especially super ones. And if everyone loved gritty lo-fi pop music, that would be cool too. The Super Vacations provide songcraft reminiscent of Dennis Wilson filtered through production similar to Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. Signed to SHDWPLY RECORDS, they share the same label as Gary War and Teeth Mountain.

Balitmore's Teeth Mountain have also just released an LP, which the first 100 were released on limited edition blue vinyl. Not just pretty on the outside, the tribal electro soul beated record surges effortlessly. I missed them at whartscape, but plan to document live coverage asap.

With age, I'd expect to hear more from me about all 3 artists. Buy their debut albums here or here right now. Hopefully another triple-billed tour is in the works.
