Approximate Infinite Daydream

One of the best parts about Baltimore's music scene is the abundance of variety and creativity when it comes to different genres and sounds. Contemporary ambient music is a genre that's been particularly bountiful as of late around town, and Approximate Infinite Daydream is a new series that aims to highlight this burgeoning realm.

Created by Matthew Papich (Co La, Ecstatic Sunshine) and Neal Reinalda (Daytime), the concept is not your typical concert series. All of the performers will be solo acts, and all of which are of the more ambient and experimental variety. Also important to note - these shows will not take place in typical concert venues, but rather in more common spaces not generally used for shows. Current planned sites include Fox Court at the BMA (The Echo Spot), Gottlund Verlag HQ in rural Kutztown PA, the Soft House, and more.

As for the music and the specific concept behind this series, Reinalda states "Many of the practitioners of this new music are interested in creating music for specific contexts, often domestic. This tendency follows a certain tradition related to Ambient Music, and more specifically, to Eric Satie’s “Furniture” or “Furnishing” music. As dictated by Satie, this music is intended to function in a space as background, unobtrusive yet distinct. The sound is constructed to play a role in, and transform its’ surroundings, sometimes even evoking a specific mood or feeling. Our goal is to explore the role context plays in relationship to this music, specifically the role of domestic space and time and its relationship to various forms of visual and aural works."

Artists involved include Eachothers, Bear & Pieces, Comeback Ranch, Jared Paolini, Narc, Dead Drums, Co La, Daytime, Dustin Wong, Ken Seeno, and Gem Vision, and more. The series starts with a book release/primer on April 28, and you can RSVP right here.

Co La

Matthew Papich, current sole proprietor of Baltimore's coveted Ecstatic Sunshine moniker, has a new project. It is called Co La, and below is one of the newest tracks.

First of all - Soundcloud is a wonderland. You probably already knew that, but Co La's internet presence is a solid reminder as to why Myspace is dead. Not to say a Soundcloud account is all a band needs to have online these days, but it and Bandcamp are easily the best interface to get your music heard. Co La's page sports 18 new tracks to listen to in full, all of which have been uploaded within the past three months.

These new works are in a new realm compared to the current Ecstatic Sunshine ongoings, digestible chunks of sound collaged together with soul and psyched-out sonic wizardry. A lot are beat-oriented, but the kind of beats you'd implement on a hazy day when the air is thick and stealthy featherweight tactics are necessary for movement through the heavy fog. Listeners of sample-based experimental pop collages, rejoice.

Though they operate in different realms, fans of Matt's contributions to Ecstatic Sunshine are probably still going to love the shit out of this new Co La material. Matt performs his first local Co La set Friday with Dustin Wong at an afterparty for the Putty Hill movie opening. I should also mention, that the Putty Hill afterparty the following night, Saturday, is a shared event with our Celebration LP release show at 2640.

Live MP3s: Ecstatic Sunshine @ Soft Fest

I present you with more great audio to share from this year's Soft Fest, this gem via the set by the ever-evolving Ecstatic Sunshine. This project has remained the solo endeavor of Matthew Papich over the last year or two, with him churning out a stellar full length and some other sounds here and there - including the digital single "Hello Money" below.

Much like the evolving lineup the project has had over the years, one can never expect exactly the same thing from a live set. Sunday night's Soft Fest performance, recorded by David Carter, consisted mostly just of samples. Papich shared endearing sounds that bubbled and entranced until they boiled over into new melodies and ideas. New waves washed into vibes that were slightly more percussive than journey's past, and even some familiar notes worked their way into the incredibly stellar set from Ecstatic Sunshine.

Live MP3s: Dustin Wong @ Metro Gallery

Dustin Wong plays this Friday night at the G Spot in Baltimore for our Hallowen show along with Celebration, Sri Aurobindo, and Microkingdom. Tickets can be found here.

With much thanks to David Carter, I'm pleased to offer a recording of Dustin Wong's performance this past Saturday at the Metro Gallery as part of the Iraqui Student Project's benefit show. This was the first of two shows Dustin played that night, and provides excellent documentation of just how magical his performances can be. Stream the set in full below (available to stream for a limited time).

While I can't say I witnessed this set, I saw him close out Soft Fest later that evening. More on that amazing event to come, as we'll be featuring some coverage in the near future. The recording of his Metro Gallery set earlier that night finds Dustin in top notch form, blasting through a jam rich in familiar sounds from Infinite Love. It's been amazing to watch his live show grow and transform over the past year, transcending the mind-melting melodies and aura of past projects like Ecstatic Sunshine and Ponytail. One can only expect more great things to come from this guitar mastermind.

Ecstatic Sunshine - Freak Flag

Baltimore's Ecstatic Sunshine is an ever-revolving cast of guitarists and sound-benders that currently houses the solo work of Matthew Papich. His last album, Yesterday's Work, was an LP that came out late last year with a swirl of altered guitars and and hypnotic melodies that still gets some pretty regular play on my turntable.

The current incarnation of Ecstatic Sunshine just released a new digital single called Freak Flag. The release is available as a free download, and includes the track below.

"Hello Money" shows some progression since Yesterday's Work, with it's accentuated percussion and an overall bigger sound. The looping guitars are still fully in tact, but are accompanied by even more noise - mostly of the percussive variety. While the vibe is generally upbeat and light, there are washes of dark that keep your head just below the clouds throughout. Matthew describes the piece as...

...music for being without intent, for occupying time and space in an ambient way, irresponsibly, and outside of the marketplace. No currency will be exchanged. Freak Flag is teenage idling as deliberate, unexceptionally sophisticated leisure. Bass, Drums, Guitar, Space.

The digital seven inch shows much promise as to what's to come from Ecstatic Sunshine, as you'll find both tracks on the next full length. The new LP will be titled Dissolver. Get both tracks from Freak Flag here, and look for more good things to come.

Tonight: Polygons, Ecstatic Sunshine, Bear & Pieces

Polygons, Ecstatic Sunshine Release Show
Tonight the Hexagon's got a killer one with Ecstatic Sunshine, Polygons, Bear & Pieces, and Beastmaster. It's the release party for a brand new Polygons album called FANTASY.

I've been spending some time with this album over the weekend, and it's full of the improvised electronic sonics and breaks that Polygons have become known for. You can see for yourself, as the duo has been kind enough to put the entire release up on their Soundcloud page. You can check it out after the jump below.

Ecstatic Sunshine is also fresh off a new release, a new duo of songs called Freak Flag. Matt sent me the tracks a few weeks ago, and they haven't strayed far from my ears since. Expect more on Freak Flag very soon.

Ecstatic Sunshine
I missed out on Saturday's Floristree show due to getting my ears properly blasted at Test Fest, but some friends with cameras were in attendance.

Deakin made his second Baltimore appearance since his first ever solo appearance at the Ottobar back in January, and was accompanied by Ecstatic Sunshine, Salamander Wool, and Rusty Santos. Peep visuals of the evening after the jump.

Clusterf*ck: Shows in Baltimore this Weekend

poster by Nolen Strals

Another weekend in Baltimore, and another overly healthy portion of shows to attend. My apologies for the sparse content this week, as I've been obsessing over getting the Friends Records website ready. Looks like we're launching it Monday, so look out for some fresh sights/sounds to come then. But for now, this weekend rules...

Tonight the Golden West features Gunslingers and Liturgy. In a weekend chock full of really loud things, this one will help get you nicely prepared for what's to come. Gunslingers refer to themselves as "massacre-rock" and are from France, while Liturgy are fairly inventive dark metal from New York. Also awesome and from New York, A Place to Bury Strangers are in town tonight opening up for The Big Pink at Rams Head.

Friday night, Ruintown hosts the DNA Test Fest pre-party with Pfisters, Twin Stumps, The Chickens, Mother Sun Flower, and more. This one's $5 or free with purchase to Test Fest the following night at Sonar. Also Friday, the Fiery Furnaces are at the Ottobar.

Events and happenings for Saturday and Sunday after the jump.

DNA Test Fest III is Saturday, going down in two rooms at Sonar. There are alot of bands playing, and many of which don't come through these parts too often. The hype for this show has been across the boards on a regional and national level, and many kudos to Fan Death for making it happen. Highlights include, and are not limited to, Lamps (above) Pissed Jeans, Twin Stumps, Sightings, Psychedelic Horseshit (above), Neon Blud, and yeah... lot's more.

Over at Floristree Saturday, Josh Dibb is back in town and is now referred to as Deakin again (as opposed to Deacon when he played at the Ottobar on New Years). He'll be joined by The Present, Ecstatic Sunshine, Vows, and Salamander Wool. And lastly, for the more conventional songwriting type, Caleb Stine is at the Golden West with Among Wolves and Noble Lake.

And this weekend's grand finale, a rager of a release party at the Hexagon Sunday night with Double Dagger, Sick Weapons (above), Hollywood, and Dope Body. Bring cash for this one, because you'll surely want to grab Masks, Birthday Gift, and Some Stunts. I spoke with Ellie of Sick Weapons a few weeks ago, and it'll be good to see them after their run around the states.

And, sleep.

Clusterf*ck: Shows in Baltimore this Weekend

This weekend is the first clusterf*ck of 2010, and likely to be the first of many here in Baltimore. While there are a hefty amount of musical things to choose from, schedules don't get really cluttered until Saturday night.

Saturday night also plays host to a football game, as the Ravens battle a team that stole football from Baltimore just a month after I was born. Man, was I one pissed off little dude.

Find out what else is up in the city that reads this weekend after the click.

The highlight of Friday night is in Hampden, where the Golden West is offering "Freak Rock on the Cheap". For just three dollars you get three great rock bands, including Vincent Black Shadow, Hollywood, and Pilgrim. Not a bad way to spend three bucks on a Friday, and all three bands should be sure to get your ears nice and blasted.

Another option Friday night is at the Ottobar. Psych rock is bountiful with Bad Liquor Pond, The Flying Eyes, Whoarfrost, and Deaf Scene all sharing the bill. This one starts at 9 PM and is all ages.

Height with Friends is at the Hexagon Saturday night, and as if his supporting cast wasn't already strong enough the bill also includes Moss of Aura, Food for Animals, Mickey Free, and American Folklore. Look for some super exciting things to come from Height with Friends in 2010, as I'll have some info on this for you in the coming months.

Also Saturday, you can catch Dope Body and Sick Weapons at the Penthouse Gallery. Both acts are quickly becoming among some of our favorite live bands in Baltimore, and this show should prove to be a good time. If you need your eardrums damaged at an even higher level on Saturday, hit up the Zodiac to catch the dark metal Brooklyn band Liturgy.

Sunday night also has a good one at the Penthouse Gallery, as Jason Urick and Ecstatic Sunshine help you wind down after a fun weekend. This is their tour send-off show, before they head up to NYC and onward to tour Europe together.

Tour: Jason Urick / Ecstatic Sunshine Winter 2010

Jason Urick at the Ottobar
Jason Urick and Ecstatic Sunshine are getting ready to embark on a European trek, but not before playing a handful of shows in New York and Baltimore. Jason and Matt are each responsible for influencing a lot of the great sounds coming out of our town, and look to spread more awe across the pond.

The tour starts with a local show at the Penthouse on January 17, and then heads up to NYC to hit the Cake Shop the 18th and Death by Audio on the 19th. After the click get all the European dates, and stream an old Ecstatic Sunshine favorite of mine.

Ecstatic Sunshine
Ecstatic Sunshine's Yesterday's Work has not been over five feet from my turntable since picking it up a few weeks ago, a late 2009 release that should be spreading to ears early this year. This time around the release is written and produced by Matthew Papich and Joe Williams, and this could be the best LP this revolving door project has produced. Peep the closing track of Ecstatic Sunshine's 2006 release below called "Little Dipper Big Dipper".

Jason Urick has been quite busy with an excellent Wildfire Wildfire split 7 inch with Jason Willett dropping recently and another 7 inch in the works with Fan Death Records. He headlined the Deacon show on January 1st, blasting ears with a hypnotically warped and intense collage of sounds. This is a tour that is most certainly not to be missed.

Photos / Review: Double Dagger, Ponytail,
Ecstatic Sunshine, Videohippos @ Floristree

Double Dagger
On Saturday, Floristree hosted an epic matinee show, giving Baltimore a damn good reason to come out as early as 4 PM. Double Dagger, Videohippos, Ponytail, and Ecstatic Sunshine each played two sets. Multiple stages were in play at the H&H, and the early evening show also included video shorts from Mark Brown, Evan Devine, Matt Porterfield, and Robby Rackleff.

While some might have been skeptical of the idea of a matinee show, especially of such epic proportions, the general consensus was highly positive. It gave you something super awesome to do at 4 PM on a Saturday, it allowed you to go to 2 full shows in one weekend day, and when it was over it was only 7 PM... plenty of time for activities!

Full 90-shot photo set of all bands compliments of Valerie and more words after the click.

Double Dagger
Double Dagger took yet another show by storm, no surprises here. At least one brand new song was played, a track that was also rocked at the Jesus Lizard show that featured the lyrics, "If you lived two lives, which do you call home?" This will be their last show for at least three months, so hopefully we all got our DD fix this weekend.

Ponytail
Ponytail are on the heels of putting together their next LP, and the second set they played on Sunday featured pretty much all new songs. Based off these tracks, more big things are most certainly coming from this local force. A lot of the new songs really took advantage of Dustin Wong's freak-of-nature guitar chops, and provided a few more mellow and intricate melodies and loops.

Videohippos
This was Videohippos second performance since adding Jared Paolini and Benny Boeldt, the first one being their set opening up for Celebration at LoF a month or two back. The new additions have turned this spaced out electro pop group into a whole new entity, and I for one am stoked at the new and more organic material to come. Look for a podcast session of a private performance Videohippos played for us last week to come here at bmoremusic.net in the near future.

Ecstatic Sunshine
Ecstatic Sunshine is always a treat, and Sunday proved no different. Matthew Papich transcended beautiful looping landscapes, much like what you'll find on his new album Yesterday's Work. I picked up a copy of the freshly released Yesterday's Work at the show, and have been spinning it ever since. I was warned by some folks on Beatbots that I may have released my top 20 Baltimore albums list too early, and they were absolutely correct. Expect a feature on this piece in the near future.

Full Flikr set of the entire show is here, and the flash gallery is below.

Clusterf*ck: Shows in Baltimore this Weekend

This weekend isn't so much a clusterfuck, as their seems to be a pretty clear path of adventures to choose. These particular adventures also happen to be some of the raddest in awhile.

Friday night, I suggest kind of sort of taking it easy. There's a lot ahead of you, and burning out too quickly this weekend will result in failure. However, with a 25 piece band covering Fela Kuti tunes for the masses, this might prove difficult.

The Baltimore Afrobeat Society is holding their yearly event at the H&H, dubbing it this year the "Fela Anikulapo Kuti Dance Party". This is always a great event, and provides plenty of an ass-shaking good time. The event is kindly asking for 10 bucks, and the show starts at 11. Sleep in late after this one, as Saturday will provide a full day's worth of awesomeness.

Saturday is the epic throwdown at Floristree, with four of Baltimore's biggest bands on one bill. Double Dagger, Ponytail, Videohippos, and Ecstatic Sunshine will all melt faces in grand fashion. This is a rare matinee show, with doors opening at 3 PM and the show starting at 4 PM.

Each band will perform two sets, with video intermissions in between each set compliments of Mark Brown, Evan Devine, Matt Porterfield, and Robby Rackleff. This show has absolutely zero potential of sucking, and might prove to be one of the more epic lineups of 2009. Double Dagger even promised a taco cart in an email yesterday... a taco cart people!

After having your mind completely blown all afternoon, head to the Zodiac to continue adventuring. SHDWPLY heavyweights, The Super Vacations, will be in town with labelmates Gary War. More on their new jams here, and opening will be the always entrancing Lands and Peoples.

If you are still alive after Saturday, and man will you hope you will be, this Sunday proves not just to be the day of rest. Jesus Camp (megachurch in Hampden) is throwing their first big big show, with Future Islands, Javelin, Grandchildren, Mark Brown, and 400 Cloaks (Meredith Moore, Andrew Burt). This lineup is stacked from start to finish, and should prove worth heading out on a Sunday. Javelin is responsible for one the best remixes on the new Future Islands remix 12 inch by Free Danger, and the rest should keep it more than interesting as well.

And then, sleep.

Dustin Wong: Seasons

Being part of both Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine have already cemented Dustin Wong as a staple of this town. Dustin's exuberant guitar work have made each of these fantastic bands possible, both thriving off the sheer joy that beckons from his ridiculously talented fingertips.

On his first solo effort, the same happiness is reached but with a bit of a different approach.

Seasons
embodies a personal look into Dustin's ambitions, implementing recordings put together between 2002 and 2007 in his house. Other sounds fade here or there, but this record is mainly the chilled-out whirlings of his guitar.

With a handwritten letter explaining the process of the record on the back of the sleeve, it's clear that this is personal endeavor. The LP was recorded using his computer's internal microphone, while editing speed and phasing to get the desired sounds and effects. In fact due to the amount of layers and detail put into these works, performing them live would require 7-9 people.

A poorly heated residence is to blame for the seasons having such a heavy influence on this album. Feelings of warm, cold, frigid, and scorching are all present, much like his other output Ecstatic Sunshine. The digital confines of the CPU's internal mic are forgotten, as the layers provide a lush feel throughout each and every looping melody.

Order Seasons straight from Wildfire Wildfire, or head down to Soundgarden and grab it for $9.99 which includes a download card. You can catch Dustin in Ecstatic Sunshine at the Hexagon August 18th and/or with Ponytail at the Ottobar on September 25th.

RUFUSTIVAL 2009

The Metro Gallery just announced its two year anniversary celebration titled RUFUSTIVAL 2009. Named after the owner's dog, Rufus is the mascot of a pretty stacked lineup.

Headlining is one of the loudest bands ever, A Place to Bury Strangers. This distortion-crazed three piece out of NYC put out a pretty solid self titled debut, that rages noise pop to freakishly high decibel levels. The other standout of the festival also hail from NYC, but are a bit easier on the ol' eardrums.

The Dirty Projectors have a higly anticipated release due out June 9th titled Bitte Orca. Reserve a copy on limited cassette via Domino. Tough to put a finger on their sound, the group sports experimental blends of pop and R&B, among many others.

Wye Oak are another welcome addition to the festival, as the release of their new effort The Knot looms closer. Be sure to check out the first track off the upcoming LP right here. RUFUSTIVAL also comes complete with local shoegaze specialists Thrushes. Other acts include Baby Aspirin, The Water, Ecstatic Sunshine, Chairlift, Eureka Birds, The Skydrops, and Pianowire.

The festival will take place outside in the parking lot 2 doors down from Metro Gallery off Charles Street. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased off Brown Paper Tickets.

Rolling Stone Thinks Baltimore Is Cool

Representatives of Rolling Stone were spotted gallivanting in these here streets last month. Attending an Ecstatic Sunshine and Double Dagger show at Floristree, and eating at the Golden West Cafe; dudes must have dug it, or drank entirely too much Natty Boh.

The magazine has just revealed its "Best of Rock 2008" feature, and awarded Baltimore with best scene. Apparently this means that we are a "hotbed for rap and art rock". In case you're not sure what "hotbed" actually means, the dictionary explains it as:

A glass-covered bed of soil heated with fermenting manure or by electricity, used for the germination of seeds or for protecting tender plants.

Uh, well put. While the article left out some key components, it still managed to namedrop and highlight some of our city's finer elements including David Byrne, Soundgarden, The Talking Head, and Beach House. Articles like this one have surfaced on the online wordwide web of internets for the past year or so, but this "best of" list certainly holds the most confusing company.

In the same piece there are awards for "Best New Michael Jackson", "Best Country Lolita", and...wait for it..."Best Guitar Hero Band". Granted the best country lolita is ridiculosly hot, but WTF is a country lolita? And did I really just use the phrase country lolita 4 times in a paragraph? Yes, yes I did.

I Think There's Music In Texas This Week

SXSW started today, and if this is a music blog, I should probably mention it. Many of the year's breakout artists will begin to emerge this very week down in Austin. And yes, people might actually stop talking about Vampire Weekend.

Members and cohorts of Wham City will be down in Texas full force. The Deathset, Ecstatic Sunshine, Videohippos, Lexie Mountain Boys, Jana Hunter, and Ponytail will all be doing their thing. Their ringleader Dan Deacon will be with Jimmy Joe Roche doing their Ultimate Reality Tour, which I hear involves a lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger footage.

Other artists representing Charm City include Scottie B, Aaron Lacrate, and All Time Low. In terms of musicians from elsewhere, NPR is webcasting a bunch of sweet ones including Yeasayer, Bon Iver, Yo La Tengo, My Morning Jacket, Jens Lekman, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

Baltimore's other boy/girl duo Wye Oak, freshly signed to Merge Records, will be in attendance and could potentially be one of the aforementioned breakout artists of the year. Their debut album, IF Children, will be released on the major indie label April 8. But if you head on down to Soundgarden right this second you can pick up a copy of that very album under their old moniker, Monarch. Do it.
