Clusterf*ck: Shows in Baltimore this Weekend

This weekend is the first clusterf*ck of 2010, and likely to be the first of many here in Baltimore. While there are a hefty amount of musical things to choose from, schedules don't get really cluttered until Saturday night.

Saturday night also plays host to a football game, as the Ravens battle a team that stole football from Baltimore just a month after I was born. Man, was I one pissed off little dude.

Find out what else is up in the city that reads this weekend after the click.

The highlight of Friday night is in Hampden, where the Golden West is offering "Freak Rock on the Cheap". For just three dollars you get three great rock bands, including Vincent Black Shadow, Hollywood, and Pilgrim. Not a bad way to spend three bucks on a Friday, and all three bands should be sure to get your ears nice and blasted.

Another option Friday night is at the Ottobar. Psych rock is bountiful with Bad Liquor Pond, The Flying Eyes, Whoarfrost, and Deaf Scene all sharing the bill. This one starts at 9 PM and is all ages.

Height with Friends is at the Hexagon Saturday night, and as if his supporting cast wasn't already strong enough the bill also includes Moss of Aura, Food for Animals, Mickey Free, and American Folklore. Look for some super exciting things to come from Height with Friends in 2010, as I'll have some info on this for you in the coming months.

Also Saturday, you can catch Dope Body and Sick Weapons at the Penthouse Gallery. Both acts are quickly becoming among some of our favorite live bands in Baltimore, and this show should prove to be a good time. If you need your eardrums damaged at an even higher level on Saturday, hit up the Zodiac to catch the dark metal Brooklyn band Liturgy.

Sunday night also has a good one at the Penthouse Gallery, as Jason Urick and Ecstatic Sunshine help you wind down after a fun weekend. This is their tour send-off show, before they head up to NYC and onward to tour Europe together.

Clusterf*ck: Shows in Bmore This Weekend

Ponytail
Ever since Fall started, weekends in Baltimore have been stockpiled with stellar shows to attend. Tough choices have been made, and there are more yet to be. I'm sure as heck not complaining about living in a city where choosing between this many shows is sometimes considered a problem.

Yeah, we got other problems too, but this is a music blog. Tonight TAXLO is throwing another one of their mega parties, with Peaches, Ponytail, and Men at Sonar. Now, you won't find too many Peaches tracks on my iTunes, but I'd sure as hell go to check out what their live spectacle is all about.

Ponytail, is a band that needs no more endorsement from me. Their last show at the Ottobar was considered by some to be epic, and I thought they rocked some faces off an eager crowd. Not to mention, I'm not sure I got across off how amazing Dustin Wong was at Soft Fest. Dustin performed guitar compositions similar to what is on Seasons, an album that he had written on the back about how playing the songs live would require at least seven times the sets of hands to perform. Plus, most know Molly Siegel, Jeremy Hyman, and Ken Seeno are going to bring it just as hard.

The Zodiac also hosts a good one tonight, of the more relaxed variety. Lizz King is performing a rare acoustic set, with Andy Abelow and Golden Ghost on support. You can still snag Andy Abelow's excellent set from Soft Fest via MP3 or FLAC.

Tomorrow night the Hexagon's got a pretty kick ass show, as Imperial China, The G, and Compression all play some tunes. I got the chance to speak with Pat from The G last week, in an interview fit for a D.A.R.E. commercial. Dan Auerbach of Black Keys fame is also in town, headlining a big show at Sonar.

Saturday night is yet again stuffed, but MT6 Fest only happens once a year. This year it goes down at the Hexagon, with two stages and the usual cast of misfits. Highlights include Abiku, Bad Liquor Pond, Herioin UK, Newagehillbilly, Needle Gun, and a whole lot more.

Another event on Saturday that is totally worth stopping by is a gallery opening at Open Space. The collection is being dubbed Ordinary Spectacles, which among many others, features the works of Steve Keene. Steve Keene is responsible for a whole mess of album artwork, including some of Pavement's cover art.

Yes, there are more choices on Saturday, with Surfer Blood hitting the Ottobar opening up for Art Brut. Last but not least, Time New Vikings brings its no-fi pop to the Talking Head with Mr. Moccasin running support.

Photo Review: True Womanhood, Weekends, Bad Liquor Pond

Last night's show at the Metro Gallery sounded great, with all 3 bands contributing unique vibes to an aurally pleasurable evening. Bad Liquor Pond's psych-soaked jams really do themselves way more justice live, and last night was a classic example of such.

Weekends set up on the floor, and attracted the largest crowd for the Wednesday night show. Displaying why they are one of the most fun bands in Baltimore, the duo blasted through a stellar set that solidfied faith in rock and roll, and left ear drums feeling fuzzy.

True Womanhood were an intriguing surprise, having only heard a few tracks prior to last night. I am certainly looking forward to what twists and turns the future brings to their psychedelic pop sound, and recommend grabbing their demo at their next gig.

Special thanks to Chrissy for the wonderful photography, as this was her debut covering for Bmore Music. Check back here often for more of her excellent local show coverage.

Weekends / Bad Liquor Pond / True Womanhood

Heck of a triple bill this Wednesday at the Metro Gallery. Local ear-melters Weekends will be opening along with psych rockers Bad Liquor Pond. They will both be getting kids in the mood for True Womanhood, who shall bring their avant pop sound up from the depths of DC.

Bad Liquor Pond's Radiant Transmission was a more than pleasant surprise this year, but their live show is where it's really at for the crew. As for Weekends, I've already shared a plethora of positive emotions as of late.

This is an evening you should not miss folks. Stream tracks below.

Everyone Loves Weekends

It took me a week or so and my fourth try to finally arrive at a record store in Baltimore that wasn't sold out of the Weekends' debut. But man, was it worth it.

Already garnering comparisons to Ponytail, this Baltimore duo fills any rock and roll void one might possess with riffs of pure joy. No Age's Nouns was a similarly great record, but each and every jam on Weekends' s/t debut blows Nouns out of the water.

The album is fun, light, and utterly perfect for long rides with the windows down. I highly recommend checking these guys out live next go around. You can do so at the Metro Gallery on February 25th when they play with Bad Liquor Pond, get on that folks.

Stream the ridiculously great "Summer Knights" below.
