Tonight: Teengirl Fantasy, Pictureplane, Gatekeeper

If tonight's show doesn't make you want to dance, then you probably have no soul. Once you've discovered that you do indeed have a soul, brave the heatwave for Club Hippo.





The Deep in the Game dudes have outdone themselves this time, bringing to Baltimore a crop of some of the most exciting electronic dance music being made today. Performing live will be Oberlin's Whartscape alums Teengirl Fantasy, the deconstructed house music of Denver's Pictureplane, and the haunted pounding synths of New York's Gatekeeper. Baltimore's own DJ Dog Dick is also on the bill, along with the usual resident DJs.

Dog Leather - "Do Gleat Her"

Dog Leather is is the duo of Max Eisenberg aka DJ Dog Dick and Sewn Leather. I've had the pleasure of experiencing this unthinkable tandem live a few times, and recently posted the video for the first single called "Troll Spray". The debut LP is now available via Ehse Records, and I took advantage and downloaded it yesterday.

I had trouble choosing a track to share after my first few listens, as this beast beholds a multitude of righteous oddities that are worth a listen. I could have gone with "Gonky Monks", which would have been an abrasive introduction to a duo that deserves it.  Or, I could have chose "Stikky Yurple Stomp", a peak into the more avant noise-hop explorations found on the record. Instead, I decided to go with "Do Gleat Her".



This is the only track of it's kind on the LP, a spring-time hazer that goes down smoother than the rest of the scuzzy wonderment found on the Dog Leather debut. It seems to be the record's love song, a softer moment found within a piece titled Greezy Man and Stinky Man Meets Smutty Ranks On Tarantula Hill. Maybe not a fair representation, but peep the video for "Bad Poets Society" for a better idea of the LP's full scope.

With not a ton going on this weekend after being blessed with the wonderment that is THUNDERSNOW this week, I figured I'd share an oddly-matched bunch of local videos.

Height with Friends performing the closer to Bed of Seeds up in NYC. This was a really killer show that I had the privilege to attend that included Dan Deacon and Dustin Wong.

Shows: Katrina Ford DJ Set, Cool World, Happy Family

Highlighting just a few ongoings this weekend, starting tonight at Club Phoenix where Cullen Stalin's Ice Age takes over. This week he's got Katrina Ford (Celebration) guest DJing, along with Door as well. Expect sounds of the dark, bizarre, rare, proto-industrial, positive punk, minimal synth wave variety. Free before 11 PM and just $2 after.





The flyer above was just passed along to me from Mike of Run DMT acclaim who promises "a psyched out other world party/show/psychedelic experience." He's throwing a pretty radical show at the Penthouse Saturday night that features Providence's Cool World along with a surprise set from Winks and also sets from Happy Family and Costume Box (a project from DJ Dog Dick). This probably starts around 10 PM.

There's two shows this weekend that are more than worth noting, starting tonight with Reading Rainbow and Coasting coming to town and joined by Weekends and Junkers. This one starts around 10 PM at the Annex and will probably cost you $5. Peep the new Weekends video for "Totem" that debuted earlier this week below.




On Saturday night, the Golden West has a great one with the drowning psych-hop scuzz of DJ Dog Dick joined by Ponytail's Ken Seeno along with Vermont's Tooth Ache and Toby Aronson. Ken Seeno's been hard at work at his new solo record, and I look forward to sharing some of his sounds as the project evolves in the near future. This show will also run you five dollars and gets started around 10 PM.

This show was weird from the moment it was announced, as Baltimore's warehouse party icon was set to play the corporate-feel confines of Rams Head Live. That's not meant to be a blow at either, as mad props go out to giving this idea a whirl... and even more props for letting DJ Dog Dick and Sewn Leather take the stage.


These dudes were undoubtedly the highlight of the evening, blasting the zone with a heavy dose of jaded noise-hop sludge that was louder than ever before. A half full venue stood dumbfounded - seemingly unsure of how to react to this undeniably entertaining tandem. Is there a proper way to dance to DJ Dog Dick? The world may never know, but certainly a question that's worth investigating further sometime.


Sound and noise was the theme of the evening, with some hip hop thrown in for good measure. The Rams Head sound system pierced noggins in ways that probably should have made ear plugs mandatory. Wolf Eyes and Dan Deacon took full advantage of this, with the latter displaying a handful of fresh new tracks with some serious promise.

In the year's biggest what-the-fuck show booking so far, tomorrow night Rams Head Live will host Dan Deacon, Get Em Mamis, Wolf Eyes, DJ Dog Dick, Sewn Leather, and Cullen Stalin. This one is aimed at local collegiate study-folk, as a college ID will get you in for free. Others pay $10, and everyone gets a shot at a smorgasbord of electronic, noise, hip hop, club, and everything in between.

This will likely be the only chance you'll ever get to hear the melted and heavy noise of Wolf Eyes or the synthetic hip hop sludge of DJ Dog Dick at a venue in Power Plant. I've seen Max Eisenberg AKA Dog Dick perform a few times over the past couple years, and I stumbled upon his three track CDR a few months ago.



"Lap Dog" is the opening song off of Grease That I Got, and is by far the closest thing I've ever heard to a ballad from Eisenberg. Lofty synths and jaded beats give way to a warped R&B heartbreaker, all masked under Dog Dick's hazy vocals. This is followed by Eisenberg's signature abrasive and noisy beats in "New Swing Music", which then turns to the weirdo party anthem that is "Grease That I Got".

The show is tomorrow night, September 29, at Rams Head Live. Doors are at 8 PM.

Videohippos - "High Dive (ft. DJ Dog Dick)"

Yesterday's jams were seasonal, as that Wigflip compilation screamed summer, while that INEVERYROOM track is probably best used while still dripping from the Prettyboy Reservoir. Today, I have yet another summer-soaked jam for you folks to rock.

Videohippos just dropped a brand new release, a split CDR with their friends Sewn Leather. There are three brand new Videohippos tracks on this release, all of which feature contributions from other local musicians. The help includes DJ Dog Dick on "High Dive", Teeth Mountain on "Bottles", and Ed Schrader on "Fire Foot". Take a gander:



Right from the get-go, this one sports hazy keys that provide the kind of melody that is typically found up in the clouds. There are birds chirping throughout, further cementing this as one of the first true local summer jams of the year. Suggestions for use include while biking down to Jones Falls, porch-sitting, and late night rooftop sessions.

Production was headed by the always awesome Chester Gwazda, and the art is by Lesser Gonzalez. This release come compliments of Tater Junction, and even comes with a Videohippos sticker! There are only a handful of these left out of the original 150 copies, and you can snag them from Atomic Books and True Vine.

Courtesy of the Baltimore Taper, you can download the audio to DJ Dogdick's entire set at the Ottobar Friday below. Dude played a set chock full of avant-club-pop-noise, soaked in all kinds of weirdness. He seemed to be enjoying himself, with a crowd that half of which appeared to have no idea how to react to such noisey fun.

The highlight was definitely my personal favorite, "High Dive", complete with an intriguing verbal freak-out that almost resulted in playing the tune all over again... which most certainly wouldn't have complained about. Noised-out jams like "Grease That I Got" were pretty solid as well. Experience the complete set via MP3 or FLAC below.

Clusterf*ck: Local Shows this Weekend

This weekend is ridiculously packed full of options. The local music overload starts tonight at the Wind-Up Space. The Baltimore Community Radio Coalition is throwing a party, featuring Air Waves, The Art Department, Eternal Summers, and Microwave Background.

I've already gushed over the lineup at the Ottobar on Friday, and today's the last day to win free tickets to see Ponytail spread guitar-riff-pixie-dust-bliss all over Remington. Don't forget to get there early for DJ Dogdick, Dope Body, and the Crazy Dreams Band.

Shit hits the fan Saturday, with three quality shows to choose from. The Baltimore Taper is throwing his 5 year anniversary party, and inviting some his favorite bands to help celebrate. Heroin UK, the Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad, and more will all grace the Metro Gallery's presence. Rumor has it, this is the DMFS's last show of the year.

Sonar also has a stellar one, with local hero's Double Dagger headlining a show that includes the LA noise-wavers Health. Health are fresh off the release of Get Color, a much more focused affair than their last. And last but not least, Nuclear Power Pants is having an album release party at Floristree Saturday night. You can check out some positive reception for Wicked Eats the Warrior over at Beatbots and Aural States.

Choose wisely, folks.

Ticket Giveaway: Ponytail / CDB / Dope Body / DJ Dogdick

The Ottobar's got a hell of a show slated for Friday night, with epic spazz rockers Ponytail fronting the bill. For a local gig, this one is ridiculously anticipated as it has been re-scheduled twice.

Besides the headlining face-melters, 3 more Baltimore forces will aim to grind your brain.

Lexi Mountain's alternative endeavor, Crazy Dreams Band will be providing avant rock sludgery. If you never grabbed their excellent self titled LP last year, do so. DJ Dog Dick's neo-crunked electronics will also induce some fun noise for the evening.

Dope Body will be on the offensive as well, bringing their brand of thrash wave rock into the mix. Their tape Twenty Pound Brick looks to be sold out online, but you can download it for free right here via Watercolor. Chances are if you've downloaded this, and have at least half a clue about how amazing Ponytail is live, you'll be there on Friday.
