This show was weird from the moment it was announced, as Baltimore's warehouse party icon was set to play the corporate-feel confines of Rams Head Live. That's not meant to be a blow at either, as mad props go out to giving this idea a whirl... and even more props for letting DJ Dog Dick and Sewn Leather take the stage.


These dudes were undoubtedly the highlight of the evening, blasting the zone with a heavy dose of jaded noise-hop sludge that was louder than ever before. A half full venue stood dumbfounded - seemingly unsure of how to react to this undeniably entertaining tandem. Is there a proper way to dance to DJ Dog Dick? The world may never know, but certainly a question that's worth investigating further sometime.


Sound and noise was the theme of the evening, with some hip hop thrown in for good measure. The Rams Head sound system pierced noggins in ways that probably should have made ear plugs mandatory. Wolf Eyes and Dan Deacon took full advantage of this, with the latter displaying a handful of fresh new tracks with some serious promise.

In the year's biggest what-the-fuck show booking so far, tomorrow night Rams Head Live will host Dan Deacon, Get Em Mamis, Wolf Eyes, DJ Dog Dick, Sewn Leather, and Cullen Stalin. This one is aimed at local collegiate study-folk, as a college ID will get you in for free. Others pay $10, and everyone gets a shot at a smorgasbord of electronic, noise, hip hop, club, and everything in between.

This will likely be the only chance you'll ever get to hear the melted and heavy noise of Wolf Eyes or the synthetic hip hop sludge of DJ Dog Dick at a venue in Power Plant. I've seen Max Eisenberg AKA Dog Dick perform a few times over the past couple years, and I stumbled upon his three track CDR a few months ago.



"Lap Dog" is the opening song off of Grease That I Got, and is by far the closest thing I've ever heard to a ballad from Eisenberg. Lofty synths and jaded beats give way to a warped R&B heartbreaker, all masked under Dog Dick's hazy vocals. This is followed by Eisenberg's signature abrasive and noisy beats in "New Swing Music", which then turns to the weirdo party anthem that is "Grease That I Got".

The show is tomorrow night, September 29, at Rams Head Live. Doors are at 8 PM.

Last weekend's fifth annual Whartscape was likely the last, but the festival more than certainly went out on a high note. Over 100 acts descended upon a Baltimore parking lot and warehouse, all made possible by the folks at Wham City.

Friday's lineup sported a good deal of hip hop from the more mainstream sounds of the Get Em Mamis, to the off-the-beaten-path vibes of Height with Friends, and even to the jaded blunt-smoked rambles of Lil B. Friday also featured some rock and roll of the more noisey variety with killer performances from Teenage Souls and Weekends.


However the highlight of the day had to be Oxes, who presented Whoxesscape. The seldom seen and freshly reformed trio played inside the window in front of Current Space, which overlooked Howard Street. This allowed whartscapers, random pedestrians, and light rail riders to hear and watch the band at random moments throughout the day. At one point Marc Miller and Nat Fowler took advantage of their wireless guitars, bringing them out on to the street in the middle of a song. This made for some precious moments and interesting encounters to say the least.

At night there were also options, ranging from the lush soundscapes of Avocado Happy Hour, to the bewildering guitar chops of Dustin Wong, to the lo-fi sonics of Romantic States. Valerie was there to capture as much of the event as she could, and her shots from Friday are after the jump.

With rock and roll fully represented Friday, January 29 at the G Spot, we at Bmore Musically Informed wanted to add a night to a weekend that is already jam-packed to exemplify another full flowing genre of music in Baltimore

We noticed that there was a dimly spotlighted genre of music for Blogtimore Pwns weekend, and decided to help represent some more sounds that are happening in the community of Baltimore. This will be night three, and the finale of a series presented by Bmore Musically Informed and Aural States.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 the day of, and $6 with a special flyer given out at Friday night’s Bmore Musically Informed show which is January 29 at the G Spot with Arbouretum, Wye Oak, Sri Aurobindo, Weekends, and the Violet Hour. Fliers that will grant you the discount will also be distributed at Aural States Fest.

This is a showcase for some of the area’s finest hip hop, and will cap off Blogtimore Pwns weekend. Keep posted right here in the coming weeks for exclusive premieres from some of the weekend’s performers, and more details.

Live MP3s: The Get 'em Mamis at Metro Gallery

Cullen Stalin and Scottie B continued their onslaught of dance-happy acts as part of No Rule Monday night a the Metro Gallery. This week featured a local rap duo that have been blowing up (Playboy even hyped them), with the Get 'em Mamis taking to the stage.

Compliments of Jeff, the Baltimore Taper, you can take a listen to their entire set via download as MP3 or FLAC files. If you missed out on this one, you're going to want to take a gander after the click.

It was a bit past midnight, and the Get 'em Mamis hadn't even arrived at the gallery yet. But the two showed up, cut the bathroom line while hopping up and down, and then hit the stage. After bumping Terrawesome and it's preview mixtape pretty extensively, I was pretty intrigued to see what a Get 'em Mamis live show entailed.

You can hear for yourself below, but these girls certainly kept the party going. The set was jam-packed with some of the more lively joints off Terrawesome, and the GEM's rocked them with class. Climbing speakers and having fun with the crowd, this is a duo that deserves the spotlight. Don't miss these girls next time around. But if you did this time, indulge below.

The Get 'em Mamis: The Road to TerrAwesome

Originally catching all kinds of eyes after contributing their stellar "When You See Us" to the Wire's Beyond Hampsterdam soundtrack, The Get 'em Mamis are poised to catch some more attention.

Baltimore's female hip hop heavyweights are on the heels of releasing their first proper full length, aptly titled TerrAwesome. And if you checked out their latest mixtape, you'd know that "TerrAwesome" means somewhere between terrific and awesome.

The mixtape boasts a ton of a material that should eventually see their more proper debut on the LP, many of which has been teased and given video treatment over the past year. Club hit "Cold Summer" bangs just as hard as it did a year ago, and the track from their latest video "Rock With Me" is also in full effect.

The tape is rounded out with remixes and freestyles, including choice cuts from their Madonna mixtape. Hearty from start to finish and with little to no filler, this should certainly tide us over until TerrAwesome sees its proper release. And if the road along the way is this good, the destination should be worth the trip.

Show Review: Dan Deacon at Sonar

Special guest reviewer and contest winner Matt Weinschenk was there to take in all the action Saturday night. Here's his take on the multi-faceted event:

On Saturday, Sonar hosted Taxlo’s Summer Blowout with a fully loaded line-up including Dan Deacon, Black Dice, Thieves Like Us, Martyn, Scottie B, Get ‘Em Mamis, Booman, DAT Politics and more.

Michigan-based Awesome Color opened. With driving drums that never took a breath (in a good way), they sounded like The Stooges with some experimental effects thrown on top. The only downside was that they only had time for four songs.

Next was DAT Politics and were, for me, the pleasant surprise of the night. Their synth and vocodor-rich Euro-dance energy got the crowd moving with a set long enough for front woman Claude Pailliot to induce a healthy case of woman-rocking-on-stage-syndrome in most men in the crowd. A great deal of fun all around.

After that, it was Black Dice. They were too loud. I know that sounds ridiculous, but someone cranked it up about 5 notches after DAT Politics left and went for a drink. At any point, half the crowd was holding their ears. A healthy stream of people headed out and I actually saw 2 friends arguing over the one set of earplugs they had. It’s a shame, because it was too loud to listen to the subtleties of Black Dice’s electric experimental noise punk. So before you rag on me for being too old, ask someone who was there.

Finally, Dan Deacon took the stage, or at least the floor in front of the stage as usual. His recent Bromst tour featured a full 14-piece live band. Now he’s solo and played a few Bromst tracks on his traditional equipment, meaning we won’t be deprived of Bromst in future shows. Deacon had a few problems with crowd control, including "Crystal Cat" cut short by a crowd member jostling his electronics.

Hopefully his rising popularity won’t force him to switch to a traditional performance too soon. Dan Deacon certainly didn’t disappoint, with a high-energy set and a group interpretative dance to top it off.

My only regret is missing the Get ‘Em Mamis. My friend may have accidentally bought them a round of Patron shots. (It was definitely G.E.M., but who paid for the shots is still unclear.) Either way, they were having enough fun in the crowd that their show makes the “can’t miss” list for next time.

New Get Em Mamis

Baltimore's female rap force that is the Get Em Mamis are busy these days. They played Sonar last night with DC's Wale, well known for his Seinfeld soaked Mixtape About Nothing. Get Em Mamis also are dropping their new mixtape, which was available at the show last night and sometime very soon via the interwebs.

The mix is fittingly titled The Road to TerAwesome, as it's the primer for their album to hit streets this summer to be called TerAwesome. The tape is promised to have new stuff that's way too hot for us not to hear, and old favorites including a few always welcomed freestyles over Salt 'n Pepa and Madonna.

The duo also just dropped their official video for "Work" and "Rock With Me", as seen above. The clip features a parking garage fashion show and some ridiculous rhymes and flow via the ladies. According to the flyer, they'll be at that little shindig with Dan Deacon June 13 at Sonar.

I have 2 pairs of tickets to give away for Dan Deacon's show at Sonar on Saturday June 13. This is Taxlo's big summer blowout, so expect a bit of dancing, sweating, and fun.

Dan Deacon has been unleashing the brilliance that is his ensemble tour for Bromst all over the country, and is bringing it over to Europe in a few weeks. I wonder if they'll be rocking a vegatable oil fueled jet across the Atlantic.

Bromst's seemingly endless symphony of pure joy has been one of the best releases of the year, and most are aware Dan Deacon's live show is on a whole other level. Not yet aware? Head on over to NPR to stream his show last Sunday in DC in its entirety.
